  • What's New in OAB?

By definition, according to the International Continence Society (ICS), overactive bladder (OAB) is characterized by urgency, with or without urge incontinence, and usually with frequency and nocturia. In common usage, urge is synonymous with desire. Therefore, the term urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) may be preferred instead of urge incontinence, as OAB patients are experiencing something far more pressing than a mere desire to void. The ICS states that OAB may be diagnosed only if no infection or any other obvious pathology is present. Content Source This continuing medical education (CME) supplement is based on a CME satellite symposium held on April 6, 2007, at Urology Congress™ in San Francisco, California. Target Audience This activity is intended for urologists and ob/gyns who treat patients with overactive bladder (OAB). Statement of Need Some 17 million to 33 million persons in the United States suffer from OAB.1,2 Urologists and ob/gyns who treat patients with OAB need to be kept informed of new and developing therapies, so drug regimens can be selected that will provide patients with relief from the significant quality-of-life impact of this common condition for both male and female patients. Learning Objectives After completion of this activity, participants should be able to: Describe the major hypotheses about the etiology of OAB Differentiate between reformulated antimuscarinics and immediate-release formulations Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the primacy of“urgency” in the International Continence Society definition of OAB Accreditation Statement This continuing medical education activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Medical Education Resources, Inc, and cme2.
